The Egyptian national football team, known as the Pharaohs, holds a distinguished place in African football history with a strong reputation for skill and resilience. Egypt is a dominant force on the continent, having won the Africa Cup of Nations a record seven times. Despite their regional success, their World Cup history is more modest. The Pharaohs have qualified for the FIFA World Cup three times: in 1934, 1990, and 2018. Their first appearance in 1934 marked Africa’s earliest participation in the tournament, although they exited in the first round. After a long absence, Egypt returned in 1990 but again found fierce competition in the group stage. More recently, the 2018 World Cup in Russia saw Egypt qualify through a tough African qualifying campaign, generating excitement with the presence of star player Mohamed Salah. While Egypt has yet to advance beyond the group stage in their World Cup outings, the team’s skill, passionate fan base, and historic continental dominance make them a respected and hopeful contender whenever they step onto the world stage.
